Roastead - Hamburg Sept 42

Hello,
I'm seeking for details about a RAF attack which occurred in Hamburg during September 1942 or at the beginning of October 1942. Indeed I've not many information and all I know is that a Sperrbrecher used its rather secret weapon, an AA flame-thrower, to strike back.
I don't know if there were many attacks over Hamburg at this time but perhaps it is possible to determinate a few anti-ships raids. The AA flame-thrower was a close weapon so I don't speak about a RAF bombing raid.
Thanks for any help. Best regards,
MAX

Where did you come about this information?

Hello,

My information comes from a veteran of WWII who was aboard this Sperrbrecher. He told me that they used the flame-thrower against an Allied aircraft (that I suppose to be from RAF) when they were in Hamburg (Elbhafen) during September or beginning of October 1942.
At this time I don't see who might have led this attack but the RAF.
Do you know more ?

MAX

Max,

No RAF Roadstead operations were conducted as far east as Hamburg during September and October 1942, all were conducted along the French and Low Countries´coasts. Indeed looking through my sources I have no daylight raids occurring over or near Hamburg during this period.

Unfortunately, my info does not cover RAF night ops so if you are after bombing raids occurring over or near Hamburg during this period then you will need to hunt down the list of raids and targets for RAF Bomber Command during this period.

Cheers,

Tim.

Hello Tim,

Thanks for your answer. Actually an interesting answer. Indeed I'm not sure this attack was led by the RAF but except the RAF, I don't see who might have attack.... Furthermore perhaps the veteran is wrong and the ship wasn't in Hamburg but I rely on him because it isn't the kind of remembering that one easily forgets. I also confirmed that they were English aircrafts.

Perhaps the raid was led during the night but I don't think this was a Bomber Command raid because of the particuarity of the targets : ships. Wasn't only the Coastal Command in charge of this kind of target ? I'm not sure that bombers would have flow at low altitude, I mean so low that the German aboard the Sperrbrecher thought they had a chance to hit the plane(s) with their low range flame-thrower.

Best regards,
MAX
