I./FKG 50 emblem

Hello,

Was it a worm or a drakkar's bow?

Thank you.

Re: I./FKG 50 emblem

I am unfamiliar with the designation I./FKG 50. If it refers to I./KG 50, than yes, to me the emblem does look like a menacing beast, such as dragons or the like, carried on the prow of the vikings' long ship called, depending on the source, either Drekkar or Drakkar.

Re: I./FKG 50 emblem

Hello,
FKG 50 is the correct one, not KG 50. Only I./Gruppe (3 Staffeln) exist, bulit up in June 1942 in Brandenburg-Briest. Same of the personal came from I./KG 40.
Major Kurt Schede was Gruppenkommandeur (29. Juli 1942), the He 177A-1 came from the near by plant Oranienburg. At September 42 the unit has only 8 Heinkels by the end of Oktober 1942 20 Heinkel He 177 where ready for combat. The emblem from FKG 50 shows the stem of an Viking ship. The name "KG Worm" is therfore misledading and not qpplicalbe.

Re: I./FKG 50 emblem

Hello,

Can you please clarify what the extended designation (i.e., FKG) refers to? Fernkampfgeschwader (i.e., long-range bomber Geschwader), or perhaps something else?

Regards,
Sinisa

Yes you are right. As to the badge, it does look like a worm but having looked closely at the badge, it resembles more a prow or stern of a viking longboat

Re: I./FKG 50 emblem

Chris,

Thank you for your clarification.

As for the badge, until recently there were few close-ups of it, so from the distance, it did look like a worm to me too (and it would not be the first time the LW bombers sported the worm design either - the one I remember was sported on the aircraft tail).

Regards,
Sinisa
