B17 HB788 - Sgt N V Madgwick
 

I have been intermittently researching the RAF career of my late partners cousin. He was Sergeant Norman Victor Madgwick RAFVR, 1606117. He joined at No 10 Initial Training Wing (Grand Hotel Scarborough??). He was an air gunner in 214 FMS Squadron and was a member of the crew of B17 HB788 BU-B who were all killed when the aircraft was shot down on 6 November 1944. The aircraft which took off from RAF Oulton was on a "Jostle" mission in support of a Lancaster/Mosquito bombing raid to the junction of the Mittelland and Ems Dortmund Canal at Gravenhorst. I have details of other crew members Who are all buried in the Reichswald cemetery. I visited and photographed the graves earlier this year.
I believe the crash site was at or near Altenberg.
I would be grateful for confirmation of the crash site and for any information relating to how the aircraft was shot down and also anything relevant to his short career.

without going into CWGC.. were any of the crew RAAF or RCAF?

are there grave concentration reports on CWGC now?

WO Keith Mortimer Bright 426496 RAAF

WO Raymond Daniel Picciano R/140622 RCAF.
Picciano's gravestone incorrectly records the date of death as 8th November rather than 6th November 1944. I have informed CWGC of this and they are taking action to correct this.

All other crew RAF.

Does Brights casualty file not list ceash location?

Picciano file will be on ancestry.com if not on Canadian national archives site.

HB788 joined the squadron on 10/8/44 and flew on 26 ops before it was lost. Former USAAF serial 42-102439

Probably shot down by Oblt J Förster of 11/NJG3 in a Ju88. He claimed a Fortress at 19:28 hrs

Thanks for that Martin. Is there an "English" site I can refer to. My German is limited!

Dennis the only info I have on the crash site at the moment is that it was at Altenberge and that Madgwick, Bright and Harding were originally buried at Altenberge town cemetery before exhumation and reburial at Reichswald.

The crash site indeed is at Altenberge. I visited it once in 2008.
