ID of Ju 88 that shot down Cat S/210 - FL Dennis Healy
Does any one know the ID of the Junkers and Crew?
Thank you for your time and consideration Andy Bird On the day of his death, Denis Healy, (Catalina S/210), was detailed to make contact the Norwegian party at Barentsburg. The Cat took off from Grasnaya in the Kola Inlet at 07:17 hrs on 25 September 1942. Weather conditions worsened to zero visibility and S/210 was compelled to abandon flight at 10:58 hrs. When re-approaching Murmansk coastline suddenly in these extremely bleak conditions shafts of light streamed through a break in the clouds and the silhouette of a JU.88 was sighted quite close. An engagement followed during which the Junkers was repeatedly hit and finally broke off the engagement after inflicting damage on S/210. As the JU.88 was escaping the enemy rear gunner fired a final burst and one bullet hit F/L Healy mortally wounding him at 13:29 hrs. The Catalina forced landed at Kildin Island and was beached at 15:12 hrs. |
