20 July 1942: Soviet raids on Kirkenes and Honningsvaag
 

Further to my recent enquiries regarding aerial attacks on Petsamo and Banak in late June, I note that attacks continued into July 1942, with a particularly costly Russian venture against both Kirkenes and Honningsvaag harbours on 20 July.

In the attack against Kirkenes two Pe-2s were lost, while three DB-3Fs failed to return from the Honningsvaag raid.

Is there any information available from either side regarding these raids, including details of any vessels damaged/destroyed in either harbour.

I can not help you much, but may be this site can:

The Author has visited a great number of Aircraft wrecks in Norway, and put in some very valuable information about them with Pictures of what remains in the terrain. One wreck of a DP3 is dated 19.07. 1942 after an attack aganist Honningsvaag.

I. Feindtätigkeit:
c) Zwischen 17,50-18,50 Uhr 4 DB-3 im Raum Honingsvaag-Nordkyn. Abwurf von 20-50 kg Bomben auf Hafen und Ort Honingsvaag. Schaden: 1 Kutter versenkt, 1 Kutter brennt. Mehrere kleine Boote beschädigt, ausserdem Gebäudeschäden.
Verluste.
1 Soldat gefallen, 3 Soldaten schwer verwundet (2 Norweger tot.)
Flakabwehr von Schiffen in- und ausserhalb Honingsvaag ohne Wirkung.
Abschuss aller 4 DB 3 durch eigene Jäger (S. Abschn. II, Ziffer 2)
II. Eigene Einsätze:
a)
2.) II JG 5 mit 3 BF 109 von 17,55-19,13 Uhr von Banak. Alarmstart.
Ergebnis: 18,41-18,50 Uhr Luftkampf mit 4 DB 3 in Gegend Honingsvaag. Abschuss aller 4 DB3 ohne eigene Verluste.

20.07.1942

I. Feindtätigkeit:
08,19 Uhr Baw. durch 3 P-2 nördlich Kirkenes ins Wasser. Kein Schaden. Flakabwehr ohne erkannte Wirkung.
2 P-2 wurden durch eigene Jäger abgeschossen (Ziffer II, 2).
II. Eigene Einsätze:
b) Nordabschnitt:
1.) II/JG 5 mit 5 BF 109 von 08,07-08,55 Uhr von Kirkenes: Alarmstart auf Gerätmeldung.
Ergebnis: 08,28-08,32 Uhr Luftkampf mit 3 P-2 und 5 Tomahawk über Fischer H.I. in 3-6000 m Abschuss von 2 P-2. Keine eigenen Verluste.
Beobachtung: Tomahawk flogen über Fischer H.I. aufn. für P-2.

18,31 Uhr Einflug 1 P-2 in 6800 m in Raum Kirkenes aus Westen kommend. Baw. nicht gemeldet. Abflug nach NO. Gestarte Jäger o.F.

Hi,

the attack on 19.7.42 was flown by three two-element sections of IL-4 bombers of 35.MTAP. Three crews were shot down by Bf109s: these of kpt. Tkaczew, st.lt. Dolinow and St.Lt. Czetwierikow. One IL-4 returned to Wajenga with 30 bullet holes.
