Beaufighter X8084
 

There is a photo of a Beaufighter captioned as X8084 of 235 Sqdn in October 1942 which has belly landed at Chivenor on p191 of the recent book 'Stations of Coastal Command Then and Now'.


The 235 Squadron ORB does not record such an incident. Please can anyone throw any more light - especially the aircraft code letter.

I don't know the time frame, but this shows X8084 with No. 9 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit.

Yes, I should probably have said the caption goes on to say it was Cat B and went on to 236Sqdn and 9(C)OTU later.

Not pulled the details for this incident. Sadly 235 ORB's were poorly kept as it was depended on which officer or SNCO was filling in the info.

You might want to contact the RAFM London as the Archives & Libraries have all the accident records.

Could have been ac Q on 6 Oct 42 which was belly landed by Plt Off Chandler on a test flight?

Thanks Andy and Chris. I think Q must be a possibility as test flights don't figure in the ORB, presumably as they are not operational. I have emailed Hendon to see if I can get the Form 78 for X8084, unfortunately it's not easy to visit from Cornwall. I wasn't aware they also had accident reports, once I get a reply I'll ask about that as well.

If the aircraft is pale in colour, on its belly on the runway with bent props and the photos are from the front, it is Q

Thank you Chris, that is exactly the one, it's in the EDSG/White scheme that was unpopular for Beaufighters, has the early flat tailplane and dark exhaust rings on the cowlings. Now the only thing to figure out is whether it carried full squadron codes or just the Q - I think the order to remove the squadron letters didn't come out until 16th October so it should be the full set.
