Unidentified "wolf hook" insignia on a Ju 88A

Another photo went on eBay yesterday with an unknown (to me) insignia. It is auction number: <http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6273787290&rd=1&sspage name=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1> and appears on a crash-landed Ju 88A, probably in 1940 or 41.

This insignia is listed as unidentified in Ketley and Rolfe and is described as a "A 'wolf Hook' (an ancient Germanic runic character supposedly capable of warding off wolves)."

Can anyone identify the unit to which this aircraft belongs, or any info on the date, place and circumstances of this crash-landing?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Larry,

The emblem carried on the Ju 88 is that of the 3.(F)/33. A brief illustrated history of the Staffel and how the emblem came into being (obtained first-hand from its designer) is featured in my forthcoming book.

However, because of space limitations, the balance of the history, information on the unit's aircraft and personnel along with other relevant material, will be added to Andy Mitchell's site at:
http://www.luftwaffedata.co.uk/ later this summer.

I do have a copy of the photo which was posted on eBay and although the aircraft has been tentatively identified, I am currently corresponding with surviving Staffel personnel to see if we can come up with a positive ID for it.

Regards

Dave

David,

Can you provide even an approximate date for the loss of the Ju88A in question? I bought the photo, and am trying to code it into my database. If a high-resolution scan would be of interest to you, I'd be happy to supply such (no charge) when I receive it.

Best wishes

David
I know you have been at work on this title for some time. How close are you to publication?
