Wilhelm Makrocki I/Zerstörergeschwader 26
Does any one know what happened to Major Wilhelm Makrocki I/Zerstörergeschwader 26 who’s careers seems to abruptly ended on 21.05.1941? Was he killed or missing in action?

Reported missing that date north of Crete, probably due to AA fire, along with his Bordfunker Hptmn Eisgruber. Bf110D-3 (4357) U8+AB. Source: Obermaier.

Hi David
According to 'Air War for Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete' (which I co-authored many moons ago), Makrocki's Bf110 was shot down by 300-ton coastal patrol vessel 'Syvern' in Suda Bay. 'Syvern' was damaged in the strafing attack and limped back into harbour with only two of her crew unwounded. Makrocki's observer/gunner on this occasion was Hptm Heinrich Eisgruber (aged 47) who was also killed. One assumes that Eisgruber did not normally fly on operations. What do we know about him?
