Identity of Knight's Cross holder

So, who is this handsome gentleman standing next to a captured P-47D?

Yes, it is Albrecht. There was a set of him at Rechlin, with captured P-47's and B-17's, on Ebay years ago. Bought by someone from Brasil, IIRC.

Re: Identity of Knight's Cross holder

Uhmm, that makes sense as he was born in Brazil. At least a small number of South American Germans flew for the Luftwaffe all in fighters. 2-3 from Brazil, one from Chile and one from Argentina. There are surely more.

Re: Identity of Knight's Cross holder

Hello,

There is a Brazilian Historian, known to me that is writing about the Brazilians that flew for the Luftwaffe. I passed him the name sucha a Brazilian, a pilot from Aufklärungsgruppe 123, shot down in June 1944 on a Bf 109 G-8 (via the site of Nick Beale).

My particular writing is about the Brazilian born or Anglo-Brazilians or foreigners that sailed from Brazil to serve the RAF, RCAF, SAAF, in WW2....a work of more than 1,600 written pages in 7 volumes, covering more than 100 such airmen.

Nice Picture and I did not know Hptm Albrecht had flown at Rechlin...

All the best

Adriano,

That would be great read. Eu tambem leio Portugues, if you don't publish it in English.
Also, could you post a link to the Brazilian AufK 123 pilot? I'd like to read about it.

Carlos

KAKI3152 (or Carlos),

Where are you from? Portugal?
Well, here is the name of the Recon pilot:
Uffz. EDGAR THIEME, Portuguese (18 years residence in BRAZIL) pilot First/NAG 13.

My memory seems to fail me....he was from NAG 13, not from Aufkl 123 as I said previously...you can check him here on NICK BEALE's site and homesite:

Adriano,

I'm not from Portugal. I had the luck to graduate from high school (Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Altogether, I lived in Rio for seven years.

Thanks for the link. Or should I say Muito Obrigado.

Carlos

Hello,

Just as an aside to this discussion, the same photograph was (poorly) reproduced in the following publication:

On Special Missions The Luftwaffe's Research and Experimental Squadrons 1923-1945.
Smith,J Richard, Creek,Eddie J & Peter Petrick.
Hersham:Classic Publications,2003
p.97.

The caption reads:

Above: A group of pilots from JG 1 talk tactics with Rosarius (third from left) with the unit's Kommodore, Oberst Herbert Ihlefeld, next to him. The pilot standing in front of the P-47 (sixth from left) is Hptmn. Hans Philipp. He was killed on 8 October 1943 over Nordhorn while in combat with P-47s.

Hmmmmm! It is certainly not Hans Philipp.
