Chris Le Roux - promotion to Squadron Leader?
While Le Roux is often mentioned as promoted to Squadron Leader in September 1942 I can find no corroboration of this. He is still mentioned as a Flight lieutenant in the LG in December 1942, and joins 111 Squadron as a Flight Lieutenant in January 1943.
He is promoted to the command of the squadron shortly after but this was due to Tony Barley asking to be taken off operations in mid January 1943. I know his next mention in the LG calls him an Acting Squadron Leader but I assume he was promoted to WS Squadron leader by the time he joined 602 Squadron in July 1944. Could this mean the September 1942 date actually means September 1943? regards Keith |
Re: Chris Le Roux - promotion to Squadron Leader?
The Air Force List collated gazette dates of gradation for seniority in rank.
Wartime ones are on line at the National Library of Scotland. Looking at a snapshot of July 1943 (which usually is correct for promotions to the two months before) List him as F/Lt with seniority in rank from 28th Feb 1942. http://digital.nls.uk/british-milita...chive/96295434 So as far as Authority was concerned he was still a F/Lt as of May 1943. Flick through the later months to see when his substansive promotion to S/Ldr was listed in AFL and it's seniority date. Ross Ross |
Re: Chris Le Roux - promotion to Squadron Leader?
Many thanks. I spent the last hour searching this archive but could only find one reference to Le Roux but it was a missing piece of the puzzle, his WS promotion to Flight Lieutenant :)
It look like he was never given WS promotion to Squadron Leader in 1943, and so far I haven't found any mention of him in 1944 so.... That said I saw lots of interesting information on other subjects I am interested in :) best regards Keith |
Re: Chris Le Roux - promotion to Squadron Leader?
Looks like he was never promoted to the full rank of S/Ldr.
Last mention is in April 1945 still as F/Lt http://digital.nls.uk/british-milita...chive/96462666 He has left the service by the next AFL of July 1945 By the way the quickest way to use the ALF to trace someone is go in year steps, look at the back of each AFL for the name in the index to get their personal number and column mentioned. Then look for the entry in the column. You can check the AFL dates and look for acting ranks by using personal number and last name in a Google search for gazette entry. Ross |
Re: Chris Le Roux - promotion to Squadron Leader?
Thanks again Ross, it took me a little while to work it out but I got there. My search for more details of Ken Charney will begin today :)
