JU88 PICTURE
Any comment on this JU88 picture ? (I can read "L1" on the fuselage)
on the back, we have "Montpellier", (name of the airfield) then, probably the names of the three guys, don't you think ? Thanks for your inputs. GC |
Re: JU88 PICTURE
Hello Gilles. I have quality equipment, but I can't say I can see L1 on the fuselage in the pic you posted, even when magnified 5x and cleaned. Does anyone else?
I will admit my eyes are not as good as my equipment, but did you happen to post the wrong Ju88 pic? Cheers Peter |
Re: JU88 PICTURE
Peter,
you are absolutely right, I attached the wrong picture !! here it is... what do you think about it ? cheers GC |
Re: JU88 PICTURE
Well, if you're asking me what it is .......
The unit marking could be L1. I don't know if or when LG1 changed to smaller Geschwader codes like most KG a/c. The a/c code is B or R and appears yellow, indicating a 3rd staffel a/c, but gruppe is unknown. The single dorsal MG limits it to an A-1 or S-3. The wing ailerons look to end before the end of the wing, suggesting a long-wing Ju88, which rules out the A-1. The open hatch under the fuselage looks more like just a hatch rather than the open rear-end of a gondola, which would be consistent with an S-3. LG1 flew S-3s from mid 1944 to end-1944. Re: JU88 PICTURE
This picture shows Ju 88 A-1 short wing, with L1 code (líkely France 1940).
One can see right aileron goes right to end of wing. -Ed |
Re: JU88 PICTURE
...and no fuselage band and what appears to be French-type hangars behind

Re: JU88 PICTURE
Well, I was looking at the RH wing, and blown up 5x and cleaned up on my equipment it still looks to me like the aileron finishes before the end of the wing, but ..... the picture quality/resolution is poor, and I will concede there is no fuselage band, so ..... I'm happy to accept A-1
