228 Sqn 7 Mar 41
On this date, 7./JG 26 were responsible for mortally damaging Sunderland L2164/DQ-M in St Paul's Bay, killing gunner Sgt Allen Jones. Apparently 7./JG 26 returned 3 days later to finish off this Sunderland and badly damage another from 228 Sqn. Can anyone confirm the latter date and the captain of L2164 as 228 Sqn's ORB for 1941 doesn't seem to exist. The unofficial history of 228 Sqn states:
7th (Kalafrana). During the morning two Me 109s attacked aircraft at their moorings. The boat guard Sgt A S Jones manoeuvred his gun into position and fired a number of rounds before he was killed at his post. Considerable damaged was caused to the aircraft 10th. A low-flying machine gun attack was made by a formation of Me 109s on the aircraft moored at St Paul's Bay. One aircraft was completely wrecked |

There is the Malta War Diary blog, that is built using official sources. March 1941 is here: https://maltagc70.wordpress.com/cate...41/march-1941/
It lists following attacks on Sunderlands in St Paul's Bay: _ 5th, two attacks, a Sunderland hit, unserviceable for some days _ 7th, a Sunderland strafed, a gunner killed _ 10th, "nine Bf 110s in 2 formations" strafed St Paul's Bay, One Sunderland burned out and two damaged |

Chris
John Hamlin in Ocean Sentinel says you are correct, L2164 DQ-M was destroyed by fire (DBF) 10.3.1941 and sank. SOC 27.3.1941 Cheers Stig |
