He 111 coded "2L"
Hello,
I have a photo of an early He 111 (probably a B model) coded 2L+B32. This code would mean that it belonged to LG 2. But it seems there is some kind of mix up with the last two digits of its code. "2" meant II. Gruppe and "3" 3. Staffel - however, the 3. Staffel was usually attached to I. Gruppe! Moreover, AFAIK no He 111 were ever handed over to LG 2 [what about III.(Aufkl.)/LG 2?]. Can aynone help me? Thanks in advance. Chris |

Don't know if this is accurate or not, but this drawing shows 2L as LG 1.

Re: He 111 coded "2L"
"2L" was the unit code of Lehrgeschwader Greifswald, which was split up into LG 1 and LG 2 on 1.11.38.
The 2L+B32 was aircraft "B" of 8.(K)/Lehrgeschwader Greifswald. |

Re: He 111 coded "2L"
Hello Chris,
to your assumption in post #1 "2" meant II. Gruppe and "3" 3. Staffel: At that time the order for the code 2L+B32 was letter B = number of the aircraft within the Staffel numeral 3 = number of the Gruppe within the Geschwader numeral 2 = number of the Staffel within the Gruppe. The third Gruppe included Staffel 7, 8 and 9. So the aircraft B32 was the second aircraft(= aircraft B) in the second Staffel of the third Gruppe (= Staffel 8). Regards Leo |
