Wrknr painted on engine

Came across this picture. Never seen wrknr number be it from plane or engine painted on cowling. What could be the purpose ?

Re: Wrknr painted on engine

Easy reference for ground crew. So they knew what engine, type of fuel, changes, calibrations, etc.

Re: Wrknr painted on engine

Seen similar on Ju 88 several times. This marked airplane by W.Nr. and code +ML is there as well on this Me 410. Reason is that flame damper units were often retrofitted to older "power eggs" and this meant screws fitted just that plane/engine/damper.
They were marking the flame damper, but complete engine could be moved (and code seen on one Ju 88 flame damper unit did not match plane, so either plane was recoded or entire power unit swapped from other airframe)
