Bf 109E wk.nr.1983

All

This fighter was lost on 24th January,1942 near Titowka. I wonder has anyone been able to discover its tactical number (Red??) and who the pilot was? He survived the forced landing....

TIA
Dave

Hello Dave,

neither the Gen.Qu. loss report nor "Jagdfliegerverbände" Teil 9/III give the name of the pilot and the tactical number.
Listed is:
24.1. 5./JG 5 Feindflug bei Titowka Notlandung infolge Feindbeschuss Flugzeugführer unverletzt Bf 109 E-7 1983 100%.

Leo

Hi Leo

Many thanks, owner has decided on Red 12, maybe should have been a single digit, but all speculation I suppose ;-)

Hi Dave,

No rear fuselage remained when the wreck was recovered.

When I looked at the loses of 14./JG77 and 5./JG5, there were no double digit numbers until the summer of 1942 when shed loads of F models arrived, went to 6./JG5 and other staffels. A lot of E's also went to 5./JG5 and I saw at least Red 14.

Pilot is unknown and have not managed to find a reference in any other log books. Usually it was recorded as pilots often returned to the area of loss, often escorting a Storch. Especially if the pilot belly landed or bailed out.

Perhaps one day it will be known.

Only things I would comment on besides the tactical numbers, is that it should be a pointed spinner and a full yellow cowling. The owner has decided to go for originality but these two items are incorrect on the airframe.

regards,

Mark

Hi Mark

Thanks for that, as you say, hopefully the pilot's name will pop up out of the blue at some stage.
Re markings, not likely to have the 5./JG 5 Ice Bear shield either, given it was lost the day before the restructure.

cheers
Dave
