II./JG 54 on the 16 May 1943

I have a question reference a loss for this day. In Prien's JFV 12/III it has Uffz. Alfons Kriebus of 5./JG 54 flying Bf 109 G-2 (# 10 358) on the 16 May 1943. It states that at 10:25 his fighter is hit by flak near Tichwin (I assume that this is Tikhvin), his fighter goes down resulting in 100% damage. Uffz. Kriebus is not reported as KIA or POW. If this was Tikhvin it was far behind the front line. What was he doing there? How did he get back to his unit.

Thanks Matti. Is their any reason for him to have been there, bomber escort or reconnaissance?

JFV 12/III page 270: March 19, 1943 first victory of Uffz Alfons Kriebus, I-16 1540 hrs Pl.Qu. 36Ost/00442.

In JFV 12/III page 215 May 16, 1943: Uffz Kriebus is reported as unhurt.

In Gen.Qu. loss report from May 23, 1943 No. 160 he is listed as missing.

Hi

Two 109 from the II/JG 54 in Ljuban have a fight with six Il-2 between the places Tichwin and Bolschoj Dwor. The Rottenführer became the info from Kriebus "Flak, Flak". Then came nothing more from Kriebus (10.25 Uhr). Bf 109 G WNr. 10358 Kennz. <I

Hello Christian, could you send me a PM on your source and who the Rottenführer was in this case. It might be possible to find out what regiment the Il-2s belonged to and what they reported.

Christian, thanks again. I was able to do some follow up from the information that you provided and can say it was probably a long range free hunt. Just wish it was possible to determine who he was flying with at Tikhvin.
