Re: 1944 P-47 "Cindy" ...
This looks as a P-47D-22 from the 508th, FS, 404th FG. The invasion-stripes applied at the under-surfaces and at the wheel covers show, that this photo was taken post-invasion.

I am fairly sure this is a P-47 assigned to the 81st Fighter Squadron, 50th Fighter Group.

Hello Phil
If you have the original picture, maybe you can read the serial of the A/C just over the barrel of the 1st gun and below the mission bombs . Regards Phil |
Re: 1944 P-47 "Cindy" ...
As for my thought of it being an 81st Fighter Squadron ship, here is why I believe it to be correct. The 50th kept the black nose bands (as did some other units so that does is not make it definite by any means), but in comparing the style of lettering for "Cindy", it matches with nicknames applied to other 81st planes. There is a photo on-line of "Edna M", and in Roger Freeman's "Thunderbolt", there is a shot of "Cyclone Ginny" on page 49. I have several other photos of 81st aircraft with the same "style" of lettering, including starting out on the black band, etc. I have also been compiling information on Ninth Air Force fighter units for years, and have "Cindy" in with the 81st/50th, although also noted with an asterisk denoting not positive. While I can't say it is with 100% certainty, I have seen enough photos to make me very confident it is correct. Regardless, if someone can make out the serial number and share it on the board, it would be a great help.
