Operation 'Remould' & 616 Squadron 1944
Hi,
On November 26th 1944 No.3 Group carried out a exercise with 40 Lancaster's to test the RAF escort squadron's could cope with the new German jets being encountered while carrying out daylight raids. Over RAF Manston the formation, and its RAF Escort of Spitfire and Mustang's were attacked by Meteor's of 616 Squadron, so the report suggests. I would like to confirm that 616 Squadron did participate, and how many aircraft were involved from 616. Any help appreciated. TIA Steve |
Re: Operation 'Remould' & 616 Squadron 1944
Eight Meteors took part in affiliation with Lancaster bombers and three squadrons of Spitfires, between 35 and 40 Lancasters flew from Newmarket to Gravesend/Manston/Redhill/Beach Head and return via Manston. Meteors took off in sections of two. [ORB then lists the eight pilots]. Meteors intercepted and attacked Lancasters in area between Manston/Gravesend/Beach Head, Lancasters proved easy target in their straggling formation for Meteors while Spitfire escort offered no serious opposition
