Blackburn Roc '6B'

Hi guys

One for the serial number specialists!

On 29 May 1940, a Roc crew of 806 Squadron was credited with shooting down a Ju88.

Any idea of the serial number? It would have commenced L31?? (possibly L3101, L3102,
L3103, L3105, L3153, or L3156) and carried the code L6M (not 6B as I erroneously typed in the heading!).

Here's hoping!

Happy New Year to one and all.

Brian

Hello,
Just scanned through FAA1939-1945 but could only find these L6's, didn't look for squadron.
Roc
L3075 - L6R
L3105 - L6R
Skua
L2902 - L6K
L3011 - L6G
L3012 - L6K

Brian,

Who were the pilot and gunner of the Roc?

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom

The pilot was Midshipman Arthur 'Daisy' Day (from my home town Bury St Edmunds) and his gunner was Leading Airman Harry Newton (who did the actual shooting).

Cheers

Re: Blackburn Roc '6B'

Brian,
My own research from some time ago also only turned up L6R L3075 and L3105, but there was no suggestion of any other codes also appearing on the a/c. There certainly weren't any aft of the roundel on the photo I have supposedly of L3105.
Where did you get the 6B from? Was there any confirmation that it was carried on the side of the a/c in question?
Peter

Hi Peter

I corrected 6B to 6M! (see my post)

Cheers

Thanks Brian. I had the date down as 28 May, but looking back at my source, Andrew Thomas in Royal Navy Aces of WW 2, I find that the photo caption had the date incorrect, although the narrative did indicate the 29th.

Hello,
There is a picture of L3105 "L6R"; L3011"L6G" and L3012 "L6K", code markings on the fin, in Theo Balance's " The Squadrons & Units of the FAA", page 122.
