Georg Michalek - missing claims

According to Obermaier in "Die Ritterkreuzträger der Luftwaffe" Michalek transferred from 1./JG 70 to Stab II./JG 3 on 1.02.40 and that he claimed 6 victories in France and during the Battle of Britain. Further it is stated that he claimed victories 10 to 12 on 11.07.41 in Russia.

In Prien's History of II./JG 3 the only mention of Michalek prior to becoming Staffelkapitän of 4./JG 3 on 15.07.41 is a photo of him taken sometime during the Fall of 1940 the caption of which states that he was in the Stab of II./JG 3 at the time. The first claim listed in the II./JG 3 book as well as in Teil 6/I of "Die Jagdfliegerverbände der Luftwaffe" is number 12 on 16.07.41. Strangly the first 11 missing claims go unremarked in both of these books. Generally missing claims will be remarked upon in some way at the end of the claims lists for each unit in the JFVdLw series.

Can anyone provide any info on Michalek's first 11 claims?

Thanks,

Tom

Re: Georg Michalek - missing claims

Hello Tom,

Alas I do not have any details on the first eleven claims, but Michalek was Staffelkapitän 1./JG 54 in Sept 39, 1 Feb 40 transferred to Gruppenstab II./JG 3, Sep 40 to Jagdfliegerführer 1, Apr 41 to Jagdfliegerführer 2 and in July 41 to II./JG 3 as Staffelkapitän of 4./JG 3. On 4 Nov 41 RK after 38 Luftsiegen. Perhaps this might help.

Best wishes,
Rob

PS
Do you have more details on him? Please drop a PM

Re: Georg Michalek - missing claims

Rob,

The information you gave on his service with Jafü 1 and 2 is new to me. I would be interested in learning the source of this information. Certainly the three sources I sited all seem to indicate that his last assignment prior to taking command of 4./JG 3 on 15.07.41 was with the Stab II./JG 3. It would be pure speculation on my part to feel that Michalek may have made his claims attached to some combat unit while serving in the Staff of one or both Jafü.

Thanks,

Tom

Re: Georg Michalek - missing claims

Hello all,

Source Offizierkartei in Zentralnachweisstelle/Aachen - now located somewhere else.

Regret I do not have any more details - perhaps Jochen Prien has.

Cheers
Rob
