Feldwebel Ernst Riedl JG 2
Hello,
Fw. Ernst Riedl lost in action with an Fw 190D-9 at 19. March 1945 near Östringen. Was he lost in combat with P-47 oder Spitfire from the French Airforce? Bests, h. |
Re: Feldwebel Ernst Riedl JG 2
Hello,
I cannot find him in the JG 2 losses. Rgds |
Re: Feldwebel Ernst Riedl JG 2
On 19 March 1945 Lieutenant Prunget of GC 2/7 "Nice" claimed a solitary Fw 190 shot down at 1735 hrs near Kronau (6 km W Östringen). He reported he crashed in flames with the pilot aboard.

Hello,
Fw Ernst Riedl was a Bf 109-pilot of 1./JGrSüd. On 19 March 1945 he was shot down by a P-51 Mustang and KIA near Eichtersheim. Source: Investigation of Klaus Deschner/www.plane-crashes-heidelberg. Regards Leo |
Re: Feldwebel Ernst Riedl JG 2
Hello,
I don't think so! Fw. Riedl is listed at an "Einquartierungsliste" from JG 2 at Nidda. At his crashplace parts from the Jumo Engine where found and I have an lostlist from JG 2 with his name on it! He was only a couple of days with JG 2. Parts from JG 2 used Malmsheim at this days! Do you mean one of the JG 53 crashplaces around Bruchsal? h. |
Re: Feldwebel Ernst Riedl JG 2
Hello h.,
in the sixties the engine of Fw Riedl's Bf 109 was salvaged at the crashplace Angelbachtal-Eichtersheim near Östringen. I have quoted the results of the investigations of Klaus Deschner. If you are right the results of his researches are wrong. Regards Leo |

Dear fellow researchers,
1) the correct spelling is Fw. Riedel, Ernst (* 25.10.1917, Markhausen, + 19.3.45, Eichtersheim) 2) the unit to wich Fw. Riedel belonged on 19.3.45 is: 11./(III.)/JG 2 Please find attached a copy of the original war grave notification as sent by the community of (Angelshausen-)Eichtersheim to the Volksbund. As you can clearly read in this list, his unit is given as L 37547 Lg.P.A. Frankfurt/M. (Feldpost Nr.), which deciphers to: 11./JG 2 "R" . On 17.10.44 he belonged to 4./JGr. Süd and was wounded in a crash landing at Neuruppin in Fw 190 A-8, 170655, w 12 . This info comes from a JGr. Süd loss list written by Hans Ring at WASt about 30 years ago. However, Ring spelled the Name "Riedl". However - i think the spelling Riedel is correct. @Rottler: the engine salvaged in Eichtersheim was a Jumo 213 (Peter Huber, Luftkrieg im Kraichgau, 2.Aufl., pp.218/26). This fits nicely to the Fw 190 D-9 flown by Riedel. Unfortunately, the NVM of III./JG 2 for Riedel is not available anymore. Kind regards, Uwe K. (DR40eghs) |
Re: Feldwebel Ernst Riedl JG 2
Ring spelled the name "Riedl" because it is written as such in the NVM. However, in the EKM-list it is written "Riedel". There are numerous cases like this between NVMs and EKM-lists. To be sure of the correct spelling you should ask the family members.
