Ju88 attack July 1942 New Mills, Hatfield, Chatsworth House

I'm researching the an attack on 3 July 1942 by 2 Ju88's on the Derbyshire villages of New Mills, Hayfield, a quarry at Stoney Middleton and Chatsworth house. I have Peter Smith's "Luftwaffe Over Manchester: The Blitz Years 1940-1944" but wondered how to find more information on the 2 Ju88s that were lost in the attack.

2./106, Ju 88 A-4, Wk Nr 140017 coded M2+KK. Hptm Hans Bergemann, Ogefr Bernhard Müller, Uffz Ernst Fahning & Uffz Johann Fickenwirth all POW. Crashed Odlings Farm, Aswardby 2030 hrs.

2./106 Ju 88 A-4, 140016, M2+BK. Fw Heinz Majer, Ogefr Horst Wyborny, Uffz Karl Schachtschneider, Uffz Theobald Frank all killed. Crashed Limes Farm, Baumber 2025 hrs.

Both were shot down by 303 Sqn-I have photos of 2 of the pilots with a Iron Cross taken from one of those killed plus photos of the tail of the first ac and a photo of Bergemann. Target was stated as the de Havilland factory at Horwich

Many thanks Chris, thats great information. I was recently talking to an archivist at the Polish Institute and Sikorski museum (where the tailfin from one of the JU88's is on display) and they suggested that only one of the Ju88 was probably shotdown by 303 squadron and ground fire had brought the other down.

I'm writing a short blog on this and would be interested in your pictures. I think I know the one with Flt. Sgt. Popek with the Iron Cross.

Do you happen to know where the Ju88's had taken off from?

Also, after the attack on New Mills and Hayfield I believe (see below) they attacked a quarry at Stoney Middleton before strafing Chatsworth House as the escaped to the east.

A plaque t Stoney Middleton suggests it the attack was by 2 Me110's but i think this is incorrect.

Part of the tail fin of one of the Ju88's is at the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in London but talking to one of their archivists he suggested one of the Ju88's was downed by ground based anti aircraft fire.

The intelligence reports say fighters were responsible for both. Unit was based at Dinard but refuelled at Brest. Route took them up Irish Sea & then they would have landed at Soesterburg. Bf 110s were not operating in this role since early 1941 and in any case was well outside their range. I am afraid the plaque information is therefore totally wrong even down to the target. I am now away off & on until May so if you want to get in touch then, I will see what I can do
