Luftwaffe operations from Norway June 1941
I'm researching my father's war experiences. He was a gunner on a merchant ship in a convoy from Methil on the east coast of Scotland to Loch Ewe on the north west coast. According his shipmate's diary they were bombed off the east coast of Scotland on the 2nd or 3rd June 1941 and again while they were anchored in Loch Ewe on the 6th or 7th June. I assume the bombers were based in Norway. Can anyone tell me more about these operations and the actual units involved ?
Thanks in advance for any assistance. Chris |
Re: Luftwaffe operations from Norway June 1941
In Luftwaffe Crash Archive vol 8 there are 2 loss reports for aircraft flying sorties against Loch Ewe on the 7th June 1941. One aircraft is from Stab II/KG-30 and the other is from 5./KG-1. There is also mention of an aircraft from 4./KG-30 failing to return from operations but it doesn't mention what the intended target was although I'd assume it was also Loch Ewe. All three aircraft were Ju88A-5.

Thanks Hucks,
That’s interesting and ties-in with the diary of my father’s shipmate. Both were Maritime Royal Artillery gunners on a cargo ship “Empire Oryx”. They were told later that two enemy aircraft had been shot down over Loch Ewe on 7th June. From what base would these JU88s have flown ? For your interest I’m attaching the relevant pages from the diary. Chris |

According to http://www.ww2.dk/air/kampf/kg30.htm the KG-30 aircraft were from Stavanger-Sola.
