Oblt. Wolfgang Knieling

Hi,

Oblt. Knieling was shot down on 07.07.1944 or one night earlier as their seems some doubt about the date (Personalverluste, M.Balss).
But also about the unit he belonged when shot down: Stab./NJG 6 (Career summaries & Personalverluste) or Stab. - III./NJG 6 (in die Personellen Verluste, Veit Scherzer). When you take a look at the code 2Z+BD one can asume he belonged to the Stab of III. Gruppe. I know you can’t always count on this.
Perhaps someone has more info/sources to determine the unit he belonged at the moment of his last ‘feindflug’.
Kind regards,

Dirk

Last unit was Stab III./NJG6. Knieling achieved his final two Abschüsse with this unit on 6-7.7.44, the night when he was killed in return fire from his last victim, a 178 Squadron Liberator that crashed at Strallegg. Will present full details in a later vol in the Nachtjagd Combat Archive series.

Cheers, Theo

Theo,

Thanks a lot for clearing this out. Looking forward to your next volume of NCA.
Those about 1943 are in my humble opinion thé reference about the Nachtjagd during WW2. So keep up the good work.
