RAAF Help

Hi,

Looking to identify a Squadron Leader Mayle RAAF, RAF Chedburgh Navigation Leader 1945. I have tried the NAA without success. Any help appreciated.

TIA

Steve

Hi Ed,

Sadly no, or a service number. It this lack of info that is causing the trouble.

Only one I could find is S/L Peter Robert Mayle 203280. He features in several post-war gazette notices and seems perhaps to have something to do with RAF photography.

S/L Peter Robert Mayle 203280 was RAF. He was in the Queens Honours List 1951, did an assignment in the US.
I don't know the rules for RAAF sevice: could he have been in the RAAF and not been Australian?

Steve, email follows later about other matters.

Following up on Col Bruggy's suggestion, there is a photo of Mayes here:

https://www.newspapers.com/clip/23192015/

I compared it to the photo in Smith's book on the 218 squadron, see page 60.

https://books.google.com/books?id=0w...uadron&f=false

Familysearch.org now has a photo comparison option and it matches at 86% the newspaper photo of "Mayes" with the photo of "Mayles" in the book.

The facial structure of this man is atypical, making identification a bit easier. I think the two photos match up quite well. The following may also be helpful:
