German designations of Soviet aircraft types
I asked this already some time ago and now can't find it in my archive nor in my previous threads, it was possily at old TOCH. Which Soviet types were designated I-17 and I-18 by the Germans?

Re: German designations of Soviet aircraft types
A usefull answer in another forum from a guy called "Denniss":
" Polikarpov I-17 http://www.luftfahrtmuseum.com/htmd/dtf/poz19.htm http://www.sovietwarplanes.com/mig3/I-17/index.html Some more info regarding I-series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USSR_military...gnation_systems Polikarpov I-180 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polikarpov_I-180 I-26 = Yak-1 I-61/I-200 = MiG-1 " |

Re: German designations of Soviet aircraft types
I-17 - it seems Yak
I-18 - seems MiG-3 I-180 - seems I-16 of late versions and, especially, its seems cannon-armed (in wings) I-26 - yes, it seems Yak I-61 - yes, MiG But anyway, according to my experience in research, Germans called all modern narrow-nosed fighters as I-18s most often and made extremely many errors. So it doesn't matter if it called I-18 or I-17 or I-26 - it still could be MiG, Yak or LaGG. |
Re: German designations of Soviet aircraft types
Thanks Andrey,
it thought so as well, Boris |
Re: German designations of Soviet aircraft types
I-17 - ?
I-18 - MiG-1 or MiG-3 I-22 - LaGG-1 I-26 - Yak-1 I-61 - MiG-1 I-180 - Yak-7 I-200 - MiG-1 I-301 - LaGG-3 Note that the German designations are not always accurate, some don't match with the actual Soviet designations. Regards Andy Fletcher |
Re: German designations of Soviet aircraft types
I-180
Still, I would insist, that in that cases I compared the files of both sides, Germans fought with late-version and cannon-armed I-16s, and sometimes even with P-40. Not narrow-nosed a/c. |
Re: German designations of Soviet aircraft types
I would rather agree with Andrey. I-180 was an often misidentification of early La-5s...Though, I faced occasions on which I-180 appeared to be various Yak modifications.
