Lt Ludwig Schmidt of 2./JG 5 Norway 1943
I am trying to find out more information about Lt Ludwig Schmidt who claimed a Hampden destroyed (actually Beaufighter VIC JL726 LA-Z) in a dog fight involving 235 Squadron on the 12/04/43. Does anyone have any further details of the incident or even a photo of Lt Schmidt and his aircraft? Im not sure if he was flying a FW190 or an ME109.

Hello
Björn Hafsten et al in their Flyalarm (Oslo 1991) allocated Z/235 to Unteroffizier Sommeregger from 1./JG 5. And according to NA AIR28/462 RAF Leuchars ORB Form 540 Navigator P/O Sabin on W/235 saw Z/235 hit with smoke coming from port engine – a/c sank. That's all I can find easily on that combat Juha |

Hi Juha, thank you so much for your reply. It was Chris Goss who kindly gave me the name of Ludwig Schmidt. Can you tell me where I might find some photos of JG.5 Me 109s or FW190s?

Re: Lt Ludwig Schmidt of 2./JG 5 Norway 1943
One source is Brekken & Åkra, Luftwaffe Fighters and Fighter-Bombers over Far North (Classic 2008), some 85 pages on JG 5, at least ½ of it photos and colour profiles on 109s and 190s. Brekken at least was active here, not seen him lately but I also have been busy lately so maybe I have just missed his lately messages.
Flyalarm is a book on the airwar over and off Norway in Norwegian. Juha |
