Spitfire P8588 / Sgt A.G> Russell

Morning all. A few questions on P8588

I see it was involved with 610, 161 and 315 Squadrons. It crashed under 132 squadron.

Can anybody confirm the history of P8588?

Also, Any history of Sgt (1376331) A.G. RUSSELL (pilot) RAFVR who was injured

Thanks Col.

Quote a selection to choose from.

132 Squadron records may be best place for me to visit to see if I can narrow down the correct AG Russell

Question.
In the London gazette, it lists the likely pilot as

1376331 Arthur George RUSSELL (115544).

What do the numbers in brackets mean? that his service no changed?

Commissioned service number and in brackets non-commissioned

Re: Spitfire P8588 / Sgt A.G> Russell

Col,
Some confusion here.

I have P/O A G Russell with an FW 190 dam at Dieppe in BR567 with 124 Sqn.

F/L A G Russell with 1/0/1 FW 190 at Malta on May 21, 1943 with 229 Sqn.

F/L A G Russell with 0/1/2 Me 109s on July 7, 1944 with 132 Sqn.

You have two different A G Russells at Dieppe flying the same Spitfire.

I have no idea how many different A G Russells are involved here.

Chris,
I think you have it backwards. The 7 digit number would be his enlisted number, and a 5 or 6 digit number would be his commissioned number.

Enjoy!

Frank

Spitfire P8588 (Presentation aircraft named "Scawfell") crashed near Pitlurg railway station.
https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=170577
The pilot was SERGEANT A G Russell Service Number 1376331. He recovered from his injuries and was later commissioned as a Pilot Officer whereupon he was allocated a new (commissioned officer) Service Number 115544. So those are one and the same, just at different times during his Service career. So he's the Arthur George Russell.

He's not in the CWGC database, so he survived the War.

As to the history, the Spitfire Production List website shows it was a Mk IIb one of a Contract of 50 produced at Castle Bromwich
P8560 to P8609 50 Contract B981687/39 Factory CB.

Other may be able to tell you more, but hopefully we've cleared up any issues about the pilot.

EDIT to add: History: To 37MU 26-5-41 then to 610S 6-6-41 then to 616S 19-7-41 then to 315S 2-8-41 then to 118S 12-9-41 then to 132S 14-10-41 engine failed crash-landed Pitluarg Aberdeen Category? E 21-10-41 and SOC 6-11-41.

No idea why it moved around so much, perhaps it stayed at an airfield while the Squadrons moved in and out?
