Where is Oblt Helmut Afflerbach Erpr/KG30 buried?

Hi guys

I'm endeavouring to establish where Helmut Afflerbach and his KG30 crew are buried. His Ju88 4D+DA was shot down near Murmansk on 26 April 1942.

I there a gravestone anywhere?

Trying to help the family.

Cheers
Brian

There is only one Helmut on the VDK site for April 1942 so do you have a DoB? No rank, missing and assumed to be St Petersburg but the date is incorrect

Hi Chris

Thanks for that. I'm pretty certain of the date and location.

Helmut Afflerbach's crew comprised:

Uffz Konrad Lahmann
Uffz Erwin Schalleck
Uffz Heinz Reinke

All killed in the crash.

Does St Petersburg Cemetery still contain the remains of Luftwaffe personnel?
If so, are there gravestones etc?

Cheers
Brian

Brian: I am not questioning the date or location only that a Helmut Afflerbach, no rank no death location, born 14 Jul 13 was recorded killed or missing on or around 1 April 1942 and is linked with St Petersburg Sologubowka cemetery, no grave location given if any. Nothing on the other 3 apart from there is no record of anyone named Schalleck rather Schallek?

The Volksbund database will often use the first day of the month (here the 1st of April) for a loss known to have occured during the month at an unknown day. Most of the man that went missing at Stalingrad are so listed with 1st January 1943 as their death date.

So it is fairly possible that a man KIA on 26 April will be registered on 1 April. The fact that he was lost in Murmansk area on the other hand makes it unlikely to be buried in St Petersburg.

The Helmut Afflerbach b 14-7-1913 that the Grabesuche site has missing/killed 1-4-1942 I believe is only commemorated at Sologubowka-St.Petersburg- SammelFrdhof but not actually buried there being still shown as missing.

You are right, Brian, Helmut Afflerbach is only listed in the Gedenkbuch of Sologubowka, and the VDK database gives as his death or MIA location: "Nordabschnitt", that I have seen used in German documents to qualify the area of Petsamo-Murmansk.

"Nordabschnitt" = Northern Sector
