June 28, 1943 JG2 vs B-17's (St.Nazaire)
 

Please can anybody help me with locating a narrative of the action between JG2 and a force of B-17's attacking St Nazaire. I am also interested in claims and losses and believe that more than 10 pilots of JG2 made claims that day. Thank you for any help.

Did the 8th USAAF actually lose that many B-17's attacking St Nazaire ?

Hello Black6,

according to the 8th USAAF Target Summary on 28 June 1943 158 B-17 attacked locks and submarine-pens at Saint-Nazaire between 1655 to 1725 hrs.
The III./JG 2 claimed 9 B-17 (compare post #7 in the thread "7/jg2 june 1943"). In the Tony Wood list 4 of the 13 B-17 claims are double.
The 1717 hrs claim was assigned to Oblt Philipp, the 1731 claim to Lt Eder, the 1755 claim to Ofw Ebert and the 1758 claim to Ofw May.

Hello Peter,

in the USAAF chronology http://paul.rutgers.edu/~mcgrew/wwii/usaf/html/ for Monday, 28 June 1943 under VIII Bomber Command Mission Number 69 is the entry „… we lose 8 B-17's and 57 others are damaged; casualties are 3 KIA, 14 WIA and 50 MIA“.
