Does anyone have a loss report for a Ju88 that ditched into Loch Broom, Scotland on 29/12/44 ? TIA Dave |
Re: Ditched Ju 88 ?
This was Ju188D-3 A6+FH of 1(F)/120 which developed engine trouble resulting in crew being told to bale out. FF Uffz Werner Grundmann missing, B Oblt, Werner Neugebauer +, Bf Uffz.Heinrich Kostner missing and Bm Uffz. Heinz Josef baled out POW. According to the POW ,the first to jump, the mission was Recon. to Scapa Flow, after landing he wandered about coming upon a house and was suprised that he was not in the Orkneys. The report indicates that the body of Neugebauer was washed ashore later, and that the time of crash was 1800hrs on 28th. Dec.

Re: Ditched Ju 88 ?
According to "Aéro-Journal n°47", this aircraft (code A6+FN, slighty different from above) took off from Sola, Norway, on the 28th to take pictures of Scapa Flow and evaluate the number and types of warships here, to prepare a Mistel raid.
Its fate is described as force-landed on the west coast of Scotland after an engine fire, only one survivor. Still according to the same article, the lack of intelligence due to this loss delayed a possible attack and in January 1945 two Ar234B-2 planned to go to FAG 5 were instead sent to Baumbacha airfield, a Mistel base, to continue the recon work on Scapa Flow. |
