RAF DAKOTA losses Market Garden
 

Hi All,

I am researching a RAF DAKOTA crash in my region, period Market garden.

What I know:
- no KIA's
- 3 evaders
- +6 POW's (the a/c did not make it to the DZ)
- environment Turnhout, Dessel, Retie, Mol (Belgium)

a/c is not mentionned inthe 'aviation safety network database'.

Is there a list available from the missing RAF Dakota's?

I can find no POW trace from these men , if they came down near Turnhout , who was already liberated , who did the became POW ?

Re your Post # 4: Turnhout was (fully) liberated on 24 September 1944, so crew and/or soldiers of the Dakota may have been taken prisoner during Market Garden if a/c came down in vicinity of town.

In the online book "Air Battle for Arnhem" (Alan W. Cooper) it transpires on p. 112 that pilot Kenny and driver Evans could evade thanks to Dutch resistance people and found their way back to England.

Alfred MacAloney (RCAF) appears in the Ottawa Journal of 23 Nov 1944 as being a POW in Germany.

Kenny's parents must have been quite surprised as the day that Kenny went missing was the same day they received a telegram informing them that their other son, F/O James Frederick Henry Kenny, was reported Prisoner of War.

512 Sqn - KG413 - Should read KG418*. KG413 was a No.194 Sqn Dakota III that overshot a landing in heavy rain at Sylhet, India on 23-6-44 DBR.
