Fw Werner Gerhardt 10./NJG 1 Claim 26 Oct 40
Apparently Fw Werner Gerhardt 10./NJG 1 claimed a PRU Hudson at 13:56 on 26 Oct 1940 whilst flying a Bf 109.
https://db.wingstovictory.nl/databas....php?wtv_id=88 Are details of this claim listed in in the JFV series by Jochen Prien or the Nachtjagd Combat Archive by Theo Boiten? Best Regards Andy Fletcher |

Try Lt Hans-Erich Heinbockel of Stab III./JG 54 off Walcheren at 1326 hrs

Re: Fw Werner Gerhardt 10./NJG 1 Claim 26 Oct 40
Hi Chris,
Yes I had identified Heinbockel as the likely victor but this is contradicted by the above link and I'm just trying to determine whose claim is most likely to be responsible for the loss. Cheers Andy |

No mention of that "claim" by Theo Boiten.
The JFV (J.Prien) don't study the NJG. Michel |
Re: Fw Werner Gerhardt 10./NJG 1 Claim 26 Oct 40
Hi Michel,
Thanks for the reply. I thought it was probably the case regards the claim in JFV but as it was a daylight claim in a Bf 109 I thought I would ask to be sure. Best Regards Andy Fletcher |

The two pilots seem to have claimed the same machine looking at the type and location they mention... But it is strange that the times lie so far apart.

The NIMH image bank (Dutch national institute for military history) has a picture with the following text (translated): The captured crew members of the Lockheed Hudson of the PRU shot down near Wolphaartsdijk on 26 October 1940 with serial number N7301 at Vlissingen airfield. To the left and right are the two German fighter pilots who claim to have shot down the aircraft: Oberfeldwebel Werner Gerhardt (left) and Gefreiter Streicher (right). One of the British crew members, Pilot Officer C.G. Broome, was killed in the crash. He was buried in Vlissingen. Leutnant Heinbockel of the Stab III./JG 54 also claimed to have shot down this aircraft and to him the victory was finally officially awarded. So, in contrast to what the Wings to Victory database says, the victory was credited to Heinbockel... |
Re: Fw Werner Gerhardt 10./NJG 1 Claim 26 Oct 40
Per Prien/Bock:
26-Oct-40, Ltn., Hans-Erich, Heinbockel, Stab III., III., JG 54, Hudson, Walcheren, 13.26, 7., 126, , yes, OKL, , Prien/Bock, To Focusfocus: note the time of the claim. There were no night time claims for any NJG on that date, or any other unit. (Though at the time NJG 1 was probably the only NF unit, except maybe for some ad hoc unit.) No claim for Werner Gerhardt at all. The only 'similar' name looks to be Geißhardt from 1.(J)/LG 2 who claimed a Spitfire at 12.40. Nothing close on the 25th or 27th of October either. |

Thank you gentlemen for the additional input.
