B-17 claim on 14 July 1944
According to the Flugbuch - flight log - of a pilot from 5./JG 51 on the morning of 14 July 1944 he engaged and shot down a B-17s 4 kms south of Mylos in Greece. Apparently this claim was not confirmed, if it was submitted for confirmation at all. Has anybody got any more Information about this incident such as unit involved, target etc. ?
The date was corrected in the flight log, appearing after the entries of 15 July; although it reads quite clearly as "14" it may also - faint possibility - be a "19" and therefore 19 July. KR Jochen Prien |
Re: B-17 claim on 14 July 1944
Good evening Mr. Prien,
I watched all the crashes of B-17 of July 14, 15 and 19. At the moment I don't find anything that is minimally compatible with the luftwaffe pilot's report. On July, 14 a B-17 of the 5th wing crashed, but in the Adriatic Sea. The MACR describes the whole route followed by the bombers and it is absolutely not credible that one of them has crashed in Milos. The mission of that day was on Budapest. Departure from Puglia, of course. In the coming days I will try to verify even on days 16,17,18. If I find something, I publish it. Best regards, Elena. |

Re: B-17 claim on 14 July 1944
Mr. Prien,
I watched all the B-17 crashes from July 14th to 20th. It's So many to have fallen. But from what I see, everyone in Europe. No one is compatible. I also watched all the missions of the 5th Wing, but the route certainly did not include the passage from the island of Milos. For safety, I also looked at all the B-24s on July 14th, but even they are not compatible. It could be the case of an "off course". I can not find it. TI have two crashed airplanes in the Milos area, a Wellington and a Marauder, but the dates do not coincide in the slightest. I'm sorry, Elena |
