Jack J. Oberhansley what FG ?
 

Hi guys

this guy has me confused (or the web sites I am looking at do)

I show him in the 4th FG flying a P-51 K (or think it is him)

listed as Lt Col Jack J. Oberhansey

but I also find him in the 78th FG

but the spelling is different (typo ?)

Lt Col Jack J. Oberhansley (or Oberhansly, but not Oberhansey ?)
(which his planes are all P-47s in the 78th)

now would say the odds are he was in the 78th and later moved to the 4th
or, the plane he had been flying was used by another unit and he stayed where he was at ?

the nick name on all of his planes was the same (not sure if it allowed to post the name, simi unPC)

soooo, any idea on the correct spelling of his name, and what unit he was in and when ????

this gets so confusing :)

A name with german roots , maybe ?
Was his name " verenglischt" :) ?
like many german names during early 20th. century (WW1 and later )

Hi,
Garry L. Fry in his book "Eagles of Duxford" has the name spelt as
Jack S. Oberhansly.
He is noted as being transfered to the 4th Fg as of December 44.

Hi again,

"Little Friends" has him as Jack J. Oberhansey with P51K "QP-X" 44-11661

NARA has him as Oberhansly
Enlisted on 26/4/1941 from Salt Lake City , Utah.
Army Service number 19011127.
Also listed are Emerson and Mark, in 41 possible relatives and a Clarence in 1944.

However the Ellis Island website has NO record of Oberhansly.

closest is a Johan Oberhansli in 1915 from Zurick,Switzerland with wife martha and a 3yo girl Trma.

yes, I had seen him on the little friends site

odd they got him as Jack J.

so should be Jack S. with the Sly ending

would have to guess that he is being transfered in from another FG, so he should be in the 78th to start with

Sorry guys, the spelling on site was taken from a very old source and my 4th listing is long overdue for a major overhaul. It should be Lt.Col Jack J Oberhansly who was from Spanish Fork, Utah. Service number O-431152. The name as written here is in both Duxford Diary as well as Escort to Berlin. He was deputy group C.O. with the 78th prior to being transferred to the 4th in the same capacity. It is certainly Jack J and not Jack S.

Jack J Oberhansly was born in Utah in 1919; he is listed in the 1930 Census as living in Spanish Fork, Utah. His parents are John (age 48, first married at 21) born in Utah, and Mina (age 46, first married at 18), with brothers Curtis (age 19), Don (age 13) and William (age 9). He is listed as Jack Jr. His parents are listed as born in Utah. His mother's grandparents are listed as born in Utah, while his father's are listed as born in Switzerland and Denmark, respectively.
The 1920 Census shows his father as born in Utah (age 20), his grandfather as born in Switzerland speaking German-Swiss, and his grandmother as born in Denmark speaking Danish. There is a daughter Fern (age 19), a daughter Madge (age 15), a son Bert (age 14), Curtis (age 9), Don (age 4), and (no name) age 1.
In the 1910 Census, his father appears as John E (age 30), his mother as Almina (age 29), a sister Gladys F (age 10), a sister Madge A (age 6), and a brother John B (age 4).
In the 1900 Census, John E is listed as born July 1879, married for 0 years, with a daughter 1/12 years old; no wife is listed. John E's father is Herman (although it appears closer to Hrma) born Dec 1852 (age 47), in Switzerland, and came to the US in 1873.; his mother is Amelia, born Feb 1855 in Denmark (age 45), and came to the US in 1862.
In the 1930, 1920 and 1900 Census the family name is Oberhansley, in the 1910 Census it is Oberhansly.

Jack J's 1945 victory with the 4th FG shows his name as Oberhansley; the earlier victories with the 78th FG show it as Oberhansly.

i am far to be a name expert , but i guess , his grandfathers originally name was " Oberhansli " , with an " i " instead " y".
