Ghost Bomber wreck off English coast partically solved?
 

Years ago I saw on the Internet I saw a brief film clip from a UK Aviation Archalelogy website the discovery of a US world War II bomber off the English coast...
By accident I found this account in the Pittsburgh Post gazette April 6, 1944 p.2 story dated April 5, 1944 of a "Ghost Bomber" which was seen by a another crew: two liberators came under German flank--one was blown up; the second had 8 crew men parachuted out; the derelict plane flew 150 miles until the libertor crew shot it down in the English channel off shore--they later found the derelict was only 10 miles from its home base...

The B-24 "Boys-Howdy" was with the 700th Bomb Squadron/445th BG
the 445th Bomb Group was stationed RAF Tibenham (AAF Station 124), England, 4 November 1943 – 28 May 1945

The only 445th Bomb group prior to 5 April 1944 was on 1 April 1944

I would be very surprised if such an event would have been reported and in print on the following day.
The newspaper is for the 6th April 1944, so the event would have happened sometime before but as I say, I would not think that it was on the 5th April 1944. Perhaps some weeks earlier ?

Other eight crew picked up by fishing boat on the 3rd April and taken into Folkestone and hospital there.

42-100356 ditched in the channel with crew aboard, so doubt that it is the "Ghost Bomber" of the story.

What I find odd (?) Is that the other a/c's gunners are reported to have fired on the stricken a/c even knowing(?) That not all of the crew had been seen to bail out and were possibly still alive on board .
