USN (?) Catalina to Russia July 1941
Hi guys
US Representative Harry Hopkin's flew aboard a PBY Catalina to Russia on 31 July 1941 for talks with Stalin's representatives regarding Lease-Lend etc. I believe the Catalina was a USN machine 6416 flown by Lt Mackinley and eventually alighted at Archangel on 1 August. Return date unknown. Can anyone confirm Catalina's identity etc. Cheers Brian |
Re: USN (?) Catalina to Russia July 1941
According to Robert Sherwood's book "The White House Papers of Harry Hopkins" the Catalina was W6416 of an RAF squadron based at Oban, although the flight took place from Invergordon. He names the pilot as Flt.Lt. D.C. McKinley. The serial is not correct for a Catalina, but perhaps it was W8416 of Oban-based 210. Possibly someone with an RAF serials book will know if this ties up?
