Wallner died of his wounds on 23rd May but the incident occured on the first day of the Battle of Crete, 20th May.
He is listed as Gefreiter in KG 2 records but the photo shows otherwise. He was the radio operator of a Dornier Do 17 Z of III/KG 2, 8 Staffel, based at Athens-Tatoi. Wallner was hit by MG fire over Chania at 08:25 (probably ground fire). The aircraft suffered 5% damage, the other three crew members were not wounded. |
