Small Luftwaffe Drop Tank?

Looks Luftwaffe...but not a type I have seen before.

The Fieseler Fi 156 "Storch" carried something similar but this is definitely not it. I don't believe it could be jettisoned in the air. Other wartime Luftwaffe drop tanks were larger. A ruler should be placed next to the object in the photo.

Is this the oil tank carried on Bf 110s (definitely not my area of interest/expertise but that was my first thought)?

I would ask the OP to provide at least a length measurement for the object in the photo. The Bf 110 did carry an 85 liter, external oil tank but the object in the photo has no history.
