In Priens series on the Jagdwaffe we find in Volume 13/Part II on page 569 a quote on operations of III./JG 6 on December 27th, 1944 (in German):

"Die III./JG 6 hatte mit fünf Bf 109 einen Einsatz zum Platzschutz für den Flugbetrieb der Strahler der Einsatzstaffel des KG 76 und des Kdo. Braunegg – 2./NAG 6 – vom Platz Münster-Handorf zu fliegen, das Ergebnislos verlief.“

Basically it says that III./JG 6 flew with 5 Bf 109 cover for the jets of KG 76 and Kdo. Braunegg.

The problem is that I would like to know the original source for this report. Does somebody know? Of course I did ask Jochen but he could not find it anymore.

Would appreciate the help!

Hi John,

In Jan Horn's book, "KG 76: Die Chronik des Kampfgeschwaders 76 im Zeitraum 01.01.1944 bis 08.05.1945", he provides a detailed account on pages 175-176 of the two missions flown by the Arados of Einsatzstaffel III./KG 76 from Hansdorf on Dec 27.

He states that the Arados' landings were protected by airfield Flak and by fighters from JG 54. After the second mission, he mentions that Hptm. Diether Lukesch thanked the JG 54 pilots for their help.

The only mention in the book about JG 6 is on the same page (p. 176.) However, it just describes a message from the JG 6 Ia-Offizier (Group Operations Officer) regarding Ar 234s being attacked by Luftwaffe fighters, and the need for aircraft recognition training. This is not to say that III./JG 6 wasn't involved at Hansdorf, but it appears they weren't the primary protection providers.

Unfortunately, not much else out there in secondary sources.

Thanks, I have Jan Horn's book. The information regarding Ar 234 being attacked by own fighters comes from ULTRA, most probably from Ia of JG 6.

I now for sure that III./JG 6 flew a mission on 27.12.44. However, I would really would like to know where that detailed information comes from....
