III./JG1 7 September 1943 ME109 Loss

Hi, all,

Just a very quick question. Does anyone know the name of a III./JG1 ME109G pilot shot down near Texel on 7 September 1943? Per Don Caldwell's very helpful Day Fighters in Defense of the Reich, p. 116, I know one was lost, but not the pilot's name.

The P-47 pilot who shot him down looks like it could have been Lt. Ralph Johnson of the 56th FG: http://56thfightergroup.co.uk/combat...son/index.html

or (less likely) Lt. Anthony Carcione of the 56th FG: http://56thfightergroup.co.uk/combat...ter/index.html

Can anyone do a quick check?

Many thanks!

Heather

Thanks, both! The Spitfire bit was a mistake as no Spitfires were in this area at the time. P-47's were there, however, and the time of the claim/loss match, as well as the description from both the American fighter and bomber archival records. I'm assuming JG1 aircraft recognition wasn't always perfect, especially as the P-47's were just starting to encroach on their territory at this time.
