Rare II/KG30 Ju88 colour film - May 1940
I posted this a couple years ago but may be of interest to new members.
Home movie taken of II/KG30 in Aalborg, Denmark in May 1940. Shot on Kodachrome which was superior to the German Agfacolor. The whole film is unique and worth watching as it features close up shots of Junkers 88 squadron activity. KG 30 were engaged in anti-shipping operations at the time and of note are the shots of the crews wearing the yellow 'skull' caps to increase visibility if having to ditch in the ocean. I wonder how many of the crewmen captured in this film survived the soon to be fought Battle of Britain.... Of note are a couple of the men who are seen in multiple shots..... Klaus Hinkelbein, is seen talking to a very young crew beside a Ju 88 (three years earlier he was on board the LZ-129 Hindenburg on its last trip to the USA in May 1937, surviving the explosion with minor injuries). Werner Baumbach receiving the Knights Cross, possibly the best known Luftwaffe twin-engined bomber pilot. He was ironically killed in 1953 evaluating a Lancaster he was delivering to the Argentine airforce. The Ju88 footage is at 10:03:58 Hope the film is of interest. The video thumbnail can be expanded to full screen. http://www.archiv-akh.de/filme?utf-8...ner+baumbach#9 |
