Unknown Bf110 rudder with kill markings
From German E-Bay. What looks like a rudder with night fighter kill markings. Any thoughts?

That piece doesn't look like it's from a Bf-110, wrong shape top or bottom.
I'm guessing that the left edge of the piece is the leading edge due to its thickness and the writing under the abschuss markings seem to align on the left side, when writing left to right. Additionally, the swastika is typically located on the bottom edge of the Bf-110 vertical stab.. |
Re: Unknown Bf110 rudder with kill markings
What I can read is '43' and 'Stirling' and 'Wellington'. I was thinking about Do 215 B-5 rudder, but in the case of Oblt. Ludwig Becker and Hptm. Helmut Lent, their tails had RAF roundels above the bars.
In 1943, the Do 215 B-5 was not in active service with IV./NJG 1 by the way. Also, Lent did not fly the Do 215 in 1943. Very interesting find! |

Yes, I thought it was very interesting and figured 12 OCH would welcome a look at this object. My only other question is whether it's part of an airplane and not a searchlight or flak site

That's an interesting thought. It looks like an upside down German helmet sitting on the ground in front of it. |
Re: Unknown Bf110 rudder with kill markings
That is a new, enlightening idea. If so, that would maybe explain the wooden planks in the picture.
Another thing is that operationak night fighters in 1943 were not painted all-black anymore, but several shades of gray (not an expert that I know the RLM colours by heart), except maybe for a sole Dornier. |

A tail fin scaled to the helmet would be large.
Maybe a Würzburg RADAR dish http://www.bruneval42.com/sites/defa...2-6660-27a.jpg |
Re: Unknown Bf110 rudder with kill markings
A radar dish is a possibility but I have never seen a photo of one marked in this manner. Perhaps someone with the appropriate skill could attempt to bring up a few dates. Otherwise, whatever this is, it is marked in a way that is exclusive to night fighters as far as I know.

Hi,
It could be the reflector of a heavily damaged Würzburg. bregds SES |
Re: Unknown Bf110 rudder with kill markings
Hopefully a photo of a radar reflector appears that has markings closer in format to the markings of the first posted photo.
