Nightfighter Losses 10 Mar 45
On the above night, a Lufthansa Ju 290 flying from Barcelona to Stuttgart was intercepted by a nightfighter which, due to evasive manouvres by the airliner, ditched. Could this have been Mosquito MM527 of 256 Sqn which came down in the sea 4 km east of Punta Maestra, Italy, 2000-2100 hrs, WO R E Chamberlain safe, FS N Goodyear killed? Failing that, 255 Sqn lost TA427 but in the early hours of 10 March?

Re: Nightfighter Losses 10 Mar 45
Hi Chris:
For MM527, Air Britain says "Lost nose when cannon fired, parts damaged engine, ditched off Po Estuary 10.3.45." It doesn't specify what was being fired at. It also says TA427 was struck off charge on the 10th, again no details. Hope this helps, Mark |

Mark-Thanks. All I need is confirmation from my man in Germany-the other one came down 75 miles NW of Corsica

Re: Nightfighter Losses 10 Mar 45
No worries Chris. Thanks for the info on the other Mosquito.
Should I be budgeting for another book / magazine purchase on Ju 290s sometime soon? |
Re: Nightfighter Losses 10 Mar 45
No, I am helping someone with a query. I will be doing another book for Classic but it will not be published for a year or so (nocturnal Jabo missions by SKG 10 etc). I am taking a break for the moment-job and family first!

Re: Nightfighter Losses 10 Mar 45
For those interested, the times and location match the 255 Sqn loss

Re: Nightfighter Losses 10 Mar 45
Thanks Chris - TA427 then.
