Lockheed P-38 E6-J

Hi all,

I am trying to identify a P-38 lost in Eastern Belgium. I found two photos of it in a magazine published by a nature conservation association.

I have little to go on:
- the serial starts with 2 but it is obscured by a large disc painted on the tail
- the disc makes me think it might be a 474 FG 430 FS aircraft but that should have the code K6-
- it made a forced landing and seems more or less intact; some parts are missing

I would be grateful of someone could shed some light on this mysterious P-38.

Best regards

Luc

Hi Luc. E6 was the code for the 402FS / 370FG , the group used similar tail symbols as the 474th. They changed to P-51s in early 1945.

Any rough idea of a month, location, can you post a picture (maybe clues from other markings), etc.? Just eastern Belgium is a bit vague.

This is the famous "Kwitcherpisn'g", mount of Lt. Jack Cheatham (402nd FS) crash-landed in Baraque Michel area on the 13th October 1944.

Thanks for your contributions. I only had the photos in the magazine to go by with no precise location. But I guess ClinA-78 has it right.
Best regards to all
Luc
