We all know the colours at the outbreak of war and then from 1940 onwards but what colour were they generally painted July-September 1939?

I have a copy of the admittedly dated German Aircraft Markings 1939-45 by K.A. Merrick. On P.27 there is a photo of a He 59. The accompanying text on P.26 states overall colour was RLM 02.

Clint. Overall RLM 02 it was, with these designators until the directive of 4 July 1939 revising the fuselage codes. This is 3.(multi-pupose) / Staffel.

Chris. I agree with Clint, looks like a single colour which should have been 02 grey-green; they were re-painted white after fired on by their own Flak when the war started.

WL-APIE was one of the first 6 converted by Walter Bachmann ( a Heinkel sub-contractor) for ASR minus guns, first flight June 30 1939, then based at Norderney; the first ASR unit ( Seenotflugkdo. 1) was formed by Karl Born and officially the Heinkels were civilian not military ---hence the "WL" registration for ex-civilian aircraft. In 1939 these letters replaced the civilian "D" plus letters eg. D-OMYI which succeeded "D" plus numbers eg. D-921, though the former continued on many 2nd-line aircraft - including He.59s in 1940.

This is a handy site for German registrations, this page for "WL". Note WL-APIE is shown as a 59N but I'm sure it's a C-2 / ASR.
