Spitfire P7447
3 Attachment(s)
The attached photos of 412 RCAF Sqn were taken at RAF Digby I guess sometime after 15th August 1941 when the RAF changed to a Green & Grey camo. In fact a few aircraft have the serial numbers painted over and not yet re-applied which suggests August. BTW Does anyone know how long P7447 was with 412 Sqn as I have differing date, and Air Britain says it was DBF in May 1941!

Re: Spitfire P7447
Thanks Revi
BTW - would anyone like to hazard a guess to VZ-B and VZ-C in these photos and the date they were taken, if painted over serial numbers suggest a recent change in camo scheme? |
Re: Spitfire P7447
Larry,
VZ-B is possibly P8086 which was on charge to 412 from 22.07.41 to 23.10.41. The dates are from the Spitfire: The History from Morgan & Shacklady (also found on the website noted by Revi16.) The code match up is from Phil Listemann's Squdrons! No. 26 . Regards, Tom |
Re: Spitfire P7447
Larry. The serials were over-painted when the Sky bands were added in Nov. 1940; they weren't always re-applied. The serial on P7447 is roughly painted ( camouflage is the temporary Mixed Grey, 7 parts MSG to 1 part Night) only slightly darker than the underside colour. Other 2 are in the specified Ocean Grey, evidently now available.
It had several pigments hence the blue caste. Nick |
