Hauptmann Herbert VATER

De Zeng Files about the LW officers do inform that this Officer was born in 1903 and served with Fl.Ausb.Rgt. 32. He apparently was promoted to Oberleutnant rank on the 1st November 1942 and later served with KG 50 (as Odr Offz - which I understand is "Ordenance Officer"?).

Kracker Files do have another Hauptmann Herbert Vater was Staffelkapitän of 1./Ku.Fl.Gr 406, shot down on the 7th February 1942 during the attack of PQ17.

Are they the same person? Why the difference of rank? What was his fate? Did he survived WW2?

Did Hauptmann Herbert Vater served with the Kondor Legion previously?

Adriano - I'll try and answer some of this for you.

"Odr.Offz." is an incorrect abbreviation for "Ord.-Offz.", which is Ordonnanz-Offizier and translates as Orderly Officer in English. I do not know where the incorrect abbreviation came from, but I have my suspicions. It has nothing to do with Ordnance.

Were there two (2) Herbert VATERs or just one? There were 2 as evidenced by the separate dates of birth. The entries for both appear to be correct. To know with certainty would require the Karteikarte for both of them and to obtain copies of these from BA-MA Freiburg would cost between € 30. and € 100., depending on whether they have already been microfilmed or digitally scanned by BA-MA or Selke, or not.

Kondor Legion: I don't know but I suspect the answer is "no". There are a number of books and websites now on the Kondor Legion, so you might want to check those.

HTH,

Larry deZ.

Larry,

Thank you for this answer which clarifies some of my doubts.

Those Karteikarten are available for purchase like the ORB's at NARA? I mean, one can pay via Paypal and do access them almost intantaneously? I would be interested onto Obfw Wilhelm Baumgartner Karten...to finally clarify if he came from the same town in Switzerland that came my Family...Nice to hear or read about that possibility...you opened a "new road" for me...will check at BA-MA.

Thank you again for the reply and information.

You either have to go to Freiburg, or order a copy, wich is not cheap. They only have officers.
It's not possible to see online.

Correct. Four possibilities: (1) Go to Freiburg in person; (2) contact BA-MA by e-mail or regular mail; (3) deal directly with Selke; or, (4) hire a BA-MA accredited private researcher to visit the Research Room (Benutzersaal) there, request the Karteikarten and make copies for you.
