Possible Faked up data plate
Gents,
A friend of mine passed this over to me. Does this look genuine to you? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154040961608 I know there have been a lot of these blank plates dug up in Germany near the factory. I have never seen a DB plate stamped like this. The stamps I believe are post war GDR. Your thoughts? |
Re: Possible Faked up data plate
What makes me wonder is the designation "Mercedes-Benz".This is Daimler Benz AG's brand for cars
I would expect "Daimler Benz" for aircraft motors |
Re: Possible Faked up data plate
Name of the company was at that time Mercedes-Benz AG,

Re: Possible Faked up data plate
What was written above in incorrect.
The plate is 100% WW2...and the exact type and style (including "Mercedes-Benz") that is used on both the DB601 and DB605. That is 100%. The problem however...is that the stamping/lettering is fake. You find loads of blank plates like this, as they were tossed after the war. Someone has taken an original blank plate, and added stamped it recently. |
Re: Possible Faked up data plate
The type and style varied...but here is an original early example.
Numbers and letters in the eBay listing are not even a correct font...and stamped with a round tool (the Germans never used this type). |

Thank you Gentlemen. You confirm my concerns. This is also a very small plate that he sells and not the Large type Engine badge with address on it also. Classic case of Buyer Beware!!
There is many hundreds of years cumulative experience, You are a credite to this forum.. Thank you again for going to the trouble. |
