Ju 188A-3LT Werk Nummer question, part 2

Hi!

I did a small compilation on all known II./ and III./KG26 Ju188A-3LT's (and a few A-2s) whereabouts at the end of WWII in Europe.

The totals (I found) were as follows:
- lost during early 1945, total 8 a/c
- captured outside Norway, total 6 a/c
- captured at Vaernes, total 6 a/c (of which one from Stab/KG26)
- captured at Gardermoen, total 26 a/c
That is a grand total of 46 a/c of which three are A-2s.

As mentioned in earlier thread, Siebel in Halle completed a total of 62 A-3LT's (30 in July, 24 in August and 8 in September 1944). And another 6 were converted from A-2s.

Can anyone help me fill the gaps in the following listings?

Foremost, I would like to know the complete listing of a/c captured at Gardermoen.

Thanks in advance!

BR, Juha

Only III./KG 26 had Ju 188A-3 LT. II/KG 26 had Ju 88 LT.

Junker,

Yes, you are right. I mistook the two a/c on the loss register as being from 4. and 5. Staffels - but actually they were III/KG26 a/c with their old KG76 codes still on.

From the Michael Holm´s pages (http://www.ww2.dk/air/kampf/kg26.htm) we also learn, that:
- Stab/KG26 received a total of 1 Ju188A-3LT and
- III/KG26 a total of 49 Ju188A-3LT as Newbuilds until 31.12.1944.

So my previous total above captures 46 of these, leaving the fate of at least 4 as mysteries. (That also leaves 12 of the 62 Newbuilt a/c completely unaccounted for.)

Re: Ju 188A-3LT Werk Nummer question, part 2

From the records of Leitende Ingenieur/Gen.d.Dt.Lw.in Norwegen, the following can be said about K.G.26 at the time of capitulation:

Stabsstaffel K.G.26 at Drontheim-Vaernes had one Ju 188A-3 on strength, W.Nr. 190324 + a He 111H-6 W.Nr. 7256.

The III./K.G.26 had moved south to Gardermoen north of Oslo and had the following 26 Ju 188A-3 on strength at Gardermoen: xx0346, xx0434, xx0508, xx5252, 160072, 180430, 180461, 180488, 190312, 190316, 190323, 190325, 190326, 190336, 190342, 190343, 190404, 190406, 190408, 190409, 190603, 190605, 190606, 190607, 190608 and 280225.

5 Ju 188A-3 left behind at Drontheim-Vaernes by III./K.G.26: 160064, 180475,190311, 190322, 190332.

The entire II./K.G.26 had 20 Ju 88A-17 at Gardermoen, 4 Ju 88A-17 at Drontheim-Vaernes, 3 Ju 88A-17 at Bodø and 2 Ju 88A-17 at Bardufoss.

According to the RLM aircraft procurement programme Nr. 227 of 15. December 1944, both the Ju 188A-3 and Ju 88A-17 were aircraft conversions with 62 + 6 and 364 conversions repectively. The final two Ju 188A-3 conversions were scheduled for delivery in December 1944.

I have used the Werk Nummer and aircraft designations as used in the original Luftwaffe reports. All these aircraft were destroyed on site by RAF from August to October 1945.

Seaplanes,

Would you please also post the W.Nr. listing for the II./K.G.26 Ju 88s if they were included in the records you listed for Norway.

Re: Ju 188A-3LT Werk Nummer question, part 2

The Ju 88A-17 of II./K.G.26 were distributed as follows on 9. May 1945:
Gardermoen: 0559, 0691, 0804, 1307, 1482, 3795, 5254, 5349, 140321, 141268, 300125, 300660, 550510, 550860, 801377.
Vaernes: 801610, 822039, 882897, 812938.
Bodö: 144692, 550726, 800634.
Bardufoss: 550912, 550963.
It is a discrepancy somewhere in the reports. The total number of A-17's at Gardermoen is in one report given as 20, but only 16 Werk Nummern were finally listed. It may be that the four aircraft at Drontheim-Vaernes was counted in with those at Gardermoen. The planes left at Bodö and Bardufoss in Northern Norway, were most likely unserviceable.
